On 28 March, a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing widespread destruction also in vast areas of South-East Asia, as far as the city of Bangkok, Thailand. To date the death toll is tragic, with more than 2,000 people confirmed dead and 3,000 injured. The violence of the earthquake caused unprecedented destruction, and it will take weeks, if not months, to assess the extent of the damage.

Since the coup of 2021, Myanmar has been under the control of a harsh military junta that represses political dissent, imprisons opponents, dissidents and trade unionists, and represses fundamental freedoms. In this already dramatic context, the earthquake has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis.

Immediately after the earthquake, the CGIL contacted the Confederation of Trade Unions of Myanmar (CTUM), a trade union organisation forced into exile by the regime’s repression. In addition to expressing its solidarity, CGIL pledged to provide humanitarian aid to help the affected population.

For this, a fundraising campaign has been launched, and all those who wish to contribute are invited to donate to a specific bank account, managed by the NGO Nexus.

Any help is essential to assist the victims and support the population in this time of emergency.
